Safety and Support

Harassment is widespread within the construction industry and can include hazing, inappropriate comments and jokes, unwanted physical contact, and assault. No one should ever be subject to harassment of any kind. 

The Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters has developed an Anti-Harassment Protocol for when situations of harassment arise to give members the best representation, critical support, and trained expertise. 

This protocol provides safety and support to union members who report harassment by providing a process that protects members who fear retaliation and assures that their complaints are treated consistently and fairly. The protocol also ensures that there is a pathway to not only address the harassment complaint but support the member’s emotional and physical well-being after the complaint has been filed. 


Anti-Harassment Protocol Steps

Step 1:

When a harassment incident occurs, members can contact a business representative for assistance, or they can contact TEAM directly. TEAM provides 24 hour/7 days a week support with personnel that are trained to assist in harassment situations. TEAM also offers members with ongoing support with trained counselors.

Step 2:

A TEAM representative will:

  • Debrief and talk through the incident with the member
  • Inform the member of their options
  • Encourage the member to seek medical attention if needed
  • Provide the member with resources, support, and follow-up

Step 3:

Once a member complaint has been filed, TEAM will notify the Union if further union action is suitable or requested. The Legal Department will assign a response agent to assist as needed with an investigation or action process. The Legal Department will also communicate with the company on the investigation outcome and possible resolutions.

Response Agents

Response agents have been provided additional training to more effectively respond to reported harassment, hostile work environments and assault. This assigned team ensures confidentiality and helps remove any real or perceived conflicts of interest with members and/or contractors.
