The Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters has several scholarship opportunities available for members and dependents of members who are pursuing additional education or apprenticeship. These are all one-time awards.

Michigan Scholarships

Don Kissel Memorial Scholarship

At least one winner from each Local Union in Michigan.

Details and Eligibility:

  • Each Scholarship is for $2,500 - paid directly to the educational institution.
  • Can be used for registration, tuition, and books. Excludes lodging.
  • Winners from each Michigan local and one statewide winner (for an applicant with special needs) will be selected randomly from the pool of eligible applicants.
  • Applicant must be a child, stepchild, grandchild, step-grandchild (by birth or adoption), or by legal guardianship.
  • Parent, grandparent, or legal guardian must be a member in Good Standing.
  • Members, council employees, and dependents of council employees are not eligible to apply or win. E-Board members (who are not council staff) are now eligible to apply.
  • Winners will be notified no later than June 30, 2026.

  • Proof of Acceptance of Enrollment (if available)

Career Connections Scholarship for New Apprentices 

Up to $2,500 scholarship for the Council’s apprenticeship program can be awarded to high school graduates who have completed a Career Connections program at a partnering school. This scholarship can be used for tools and work boots.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Must have participated in high school courses utilizing the Career Connections projects from a partnering school.
  • Write an essay, “How the Carpenters Union has benefited me and/or my family.”
  • Complete 3,000 documented hours of on-the-job learning.

Applicants will need to provide a copy of their Career Connections certificate of completion from the Training Fund with their application.

Scholarships for Children of Members

The Regional Council offers scholarships to dependents of members to help them pursue post-secondary education. Applicants in 2025 received $1,500 scholarships. The amount awarded for the 2026 scholarships will be determined after January 1, 2026.

To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Have a parent or guardian who is a member in good standing of a UBC Local within the NCSRCC jurisdiction that is participating in the Scholarship Fund
  • Be enrolled full-time (12 credit hours) in an accredited post-secondary program
  • Submit a post-secondary transcript,along with their application, showing a completed semester as a full-time student with passing grades.
  • Provide a brief essay (500 words or less) on what benefits have you realized through the advancement of the Labor Movement
