post election update
As a national swing state & having the first legislative elections with fair maps, I summarized the highlights from WI below. The election is largely being reported as a red wave, which is true, but we also had several positive outcomes in Wisconsin too that we all contributed toward and should all be proud of.
- Tammy Baldwin won by 30,000 votes (out of 3.2 million votes cast). For context, Trump defeated Harris by 30,000 and Biden won in 20’ by 20,000 votes. We are the most evenly divided state in the country. Our phone banks focused on Baldwin and state senate pickup districts.
- Our priorities were in the right place: Senate Dems picked up +4 seats laying the foundation to win the majority in 26’ when the other half of the senate is up in a favorable environment. (Midterms typically work against the party of the President)
- With a majority in 26’, Senate Leader Hesselbein committed at the Madison rally to restore prevailing wage. Relationships we cultivated with senate pickups (Habush, Alfheim, Wall, Keyeski) will be critical to maintain over the next two years.
- Jodi Habush defeated Duey Stroebel 51-49%. Enough said!
- New maps reduced the Robin Vos majority from 64-35 to 54-45 (+10 seats) in the Assembly which should bring Democrats (and our issues) to the table this session.
- Davis-Bacon Republican Bryan Steil defeated Peter Barca. A complicated decision (made in conjunction with the UBC) since Barca also has long a pro-carpenter record. With Republicans likely in control of congress, relationships like Steil will be extremely important on things like protecting IRA renewable tax credits. Loyalty pays off.
